- W2331471751 abstract "Idolatry has been a fundamental notion at time of new initiatives in Christianity. Thus, Luther said that, if we could keep first commandment, we could keep them all (1960, p. 288), and Calvin described human mind as a vast, full spring (Institutes, 1.5.12) issuing in a multitude of idols (see Calvin 1960). Reflecting on state of church at time of Reformation, one might gather that, from Reformers' perspective, aim of dominant church was in fact promotion of idolatry. George Fox wanted none of it and opted for a Christian life led by spirit without any of traditional churchly trappings. Closer to our own day, in a somewhat similar vein, Tolstoy concluded orthodox doctrine was itself that blasphemy against Holy Spirit, which will not be forgiven either in this world or in world to come (1940, p. 93). And C. S. Lewis described God as the great iconoclast who shatters our ideas of God. Could we almost say, asks Lewis, that this shattering is one of marks of his presence? (1976, p. 76). The notion of anatta has been central to Buddhadharma from its origin: sabbe dbamma anatta, we are told. Perhaps, in a manner reminiscent of Luther, one could capsulize right view as anatta: if we understand anatta rightly, we understand it all.1 Both idolatry and anatta involve notion of wrong or distorted view, and I suggest it may be helpful for those of us engaged in Buddhist-Christian dialogue to think of primary idol as being self' or everyday ego: it may be that, if this idol were to go, so would all rest since remaining idols would then have nowhere to hang their hat, so to speak.2 I find it curious and remarkable self is, in an important sense, unconscious: machinelike, it is constructed and fully functioning long before we even begin to be aware it exists. At first there is simply world with ourselves in it. When we begin to reflect on our situation, we think this is reality. Only much later do we begin to have Platonic suspicions we are spiritual cave dwellers, far removed from light and viewing only images of things or idols. Interestingly enough, as" @default.
