- W2331512745 abstract "One of the features of German that causes it to be perceived as hard to learn is unquestionably the gender of nouns. Noun gender, of course, is part of a larger problem, the great number-gender-case complex. But there is no doubt that this complex would be far simpler if one of its more troublesome elements were removed. Gender can hardly be exorcized from the language, but it was suggested as early as the 1930s (Steckelberg 1937) that gender be learned by rule, not rote. Why have generations of teachers failed to put this suggestion into practice? We think the failure is attributable to the fact that no textbook writers were convinced the idea had sufficient merit. Any teachers persuaded as to the idea's value have been faced with the necessity of throwing away the textbook and writing one of their own. This is because (as the present article will argue) the problem of noun genders interfering with the learning of German case can only be solved by carefully controlling the order in which the nouns are introduced to the students-and in a typical classroom this order is almost totally determined by the textbook being used.1 For this reason our study is textbook-oriented. The outline of rules allowing students to predict noun gender is based on the particular textbook used at our university. The vocabulary our study is based on is that of Rogers and Watkins (1981), referred to subsequently as GCP The context provided by GCP will be quite familiar to those using different publications, since GCP's vocabulary appears typical of the lexicon provided by other textbooks. The only other pedagogically-oriented study of German noun gender appeared in 1976. In a summation of the findings of his master's thesis, Strong (1976) showed that 52.1% of the standard spoken German vocabulary of Pfeffer (1970) has genders determinable by a set of rules.2 The rules are a refinement and expansion of those appearing in Steckelberg (1937). Strong's rules represent the point of departure in any discussion of German noun gender regularity and we repeat them here in their entirety (Strong 1976, p. 75):" @default.
