- W2331526398 abstract "In the early days of the 19th century, when Japan was still under the policy of seclusion, Yonezawa was called “the Nagasaki of North Japan” as it then was one of the important centres for the studies of Dutch Learning. With all such a glorious tradition, however, the English studies in Yonezawa can not be traced up to before 1899, the 2nd year of Meizi, when the Clan authorities began to give English lessons to some eighty students among whom we can find Hirata Tosuke and Utimura Ryozo. In January 1871 a oreign language school was built in the Kozyokan, the Clan University, inviting three English teachers from Keiogizyuku in Tokyo. One of the surprising and epoch-making attempts for the English studies in Yonezawa was the invitation of Charles Henry Dallas, an English teacher, as a teacher of English to Yonezawa school in the autumn of the same year.He stayed in Yonezawa for four years and not only taught many branches of lessons in English but introduced western gymnastics and cricket games. Before he left Yonezawa in 1875 he had a beef-restaurant opened by his servant. Since then Yonezawa beef has been a speciality there.Official records about the invitation of C. H. Dallas are appended." @default.
