- W233172476 abstract "Geophysical well logs, including natural gamma and electric logs, are an invaluable tool for geologic and hydrologic mapping. In determining lithology, such logs provide quick, continuous, and inexpensive results, as opposed to time consuming and costly well cuttings and cores. Geophysical data from wells in transects in Sarasota County, Florida, were used to construct subsurface geologic contour maps of this region. Formations and smaller units were outlined from a qualitative analysis of geophysical well logs in conjunction with lithologic logs, and biostratigraphic and isotopic data. This method was used to identify formation boundaries in Cenozoic siliciclastic and carbonate sequences in these southwestern Florida sites. At these sites, the bottoms of formations often are marked by the occurrence of peaks on natural gamma logs. The peaks indicate an increase in natural radioactivity from [sup 238]U and [sup 232]Th concentrated in deposits that are rich in phosphatic minerals. In addition, electric logs consisting of spontaneous potential and single-point resistivity measurements were used to correlate distinct lithologies within formations. This procedure proves useful in sediments with low radioactivity and therefore non-distinctive gamma logs. Analyzed together geophysical logs provide qualitative geologic results. The qualitative approach explained here is stratigraphically reliable when used in conjunctionmore » with other types of data. The geologic framework outlines in these maps and cross sections will aid in managing scarce natural resources, such as water, in southwestern Florida.« less" @default.
