- W2331756028 abstract "Physiotherapy for lower back pain can involve a variety of modalities including silicate gel “hot packs” designed to administer heat therapy by direct contact to various parts of the body.1 We recently encountered a 30-year-old International Paralympics female basketball player who presented with a 1.5% TBSA deep dermal contact burn to her sacral area. She had seen her physiotherapist 24 hours before presentation and had been treated with a hot pack for lower back pain before a major game. She was paraplegic and insensate below the T9 level subsequent to a spinal injury resulting from a horse riding accident 12 years ago. Unlike previous treatments with hot packs, the patient felt that on this occasion, the treatment had lasted longer and that her therapist had not sufficiently encased the hot pack in protective padding before application, which had resulted in the burn. She was keen for early recovery, and her burn was excised and the defect resurfaced with an autologous split-thickness skin graft. She missed three international matches during her week-long hospital stay, and as team captain, she was deeply distressed by this mishap as she felt she had let her whole team down. She is being currently followed up by our clinical psychologist and rehabilitating in the community." @default.
