- W2331899512 abstract "INTRODUCTION For some three decades massive investments by the U.S. Government have brought two major technology concepts to the point of validation laser power beaming and inertial confinement fusion. A concept for half a century from now has been proposed that would combine anticipated future space capabilities of these two concepts. Beamed laser energy would be used to ignite fusion pellets carried onboard the spacecraft. Because the primary energy source would not be onboard, this would dramatically increase payload mass fraction and permit far greater spacecraft velocities. The result would be a stunning capability of fast interplanetary travel Mars in 3 weeks, Jupiter in 8 weeks, and Saturn in 12 weeks. Such a capability could significantly reduce costs and risks for colonizing the moon, provide utility power and propulsion in cislunar space as well as fast transport to the major planets. This paper describes this concept from two viewpoints. One is an overview technical description of the concept itself. The other is a description of a broad vision of the Beamed Energy Option for Space independent of a space fusion engine. This vision consists of a framework of stepping stones and pathways that could lead to or accompany the evolution of beamed energy capability for space (both laser and microwave)." @default.
