- W2331951672 abstract "The occurrences of Dipodomys microps and D. merriami in a small area of the Nevada Test Site were examined. The abundance of D. microps varies inversely with the abundance of Bromus rubens. Reynolds' hypothesis that dense grass interferes with escape from predators is reconsidered in terms of grass density and size of rodent. The principles which influence animal distributions are demanding more attention of modern ecologists. Of special interest is the evidence that the local distributions of animals are determined by factors quali- tatively different from those determining their geographic range. The nature of the former is indicated by Teal (1958) in his analysis of the distribution of three species of fiddler crabs in Georgia salt marshes. Getz (1961) has reviewed this problem with regard to mammals and noted that while most studies have dealt with the physical aspects of the environment, response to biotic factors must surely influence the local distributions of many species. While collecting small mammals during February, 1959, on Jack- ass Flats at the Nevada Test Site in Nye County, Nevada, it was noted that the Great Basin Kangaroo rat (Dipodomys microps occi- dentalis) was trapped less frequently in areas with high densities of the exotic brome grass, Bromus rubens2 than in non-grassy areas. This situation was particularly apparent 2 mi. south of Topopah Springs (4700 ft.), where the trapping quadrat was divided equally into grassy and relatively grassless areas within a remarkably uniform blackbrush (Coleogyne ramosissima) community. The non-grassy area yielded 8 times as many D. microps as did the grassy one. Be- cause the perennial vegetation and edaphic factors seemed to be uni- form throughout the area, it appeared that the grass influenced the local distribution and/or movement of D. microps." @default.
