- W2332015662 abstract "This paper examines the gust response of a finite span wing model with respect to structural and geometric parameters. Past studies into the gust response of a finite span wing have focused on the closed-loop design. Very little has been done in understanding how the structural design and geometric design affect the gust response. The study contained in this paper seeks to understand how the structural and geometrical parameters affect the gust response in a Root Mean Square (RMS) sense by using a two degree of freedom, flexible, finite span, lifting surface model. From the studies, it was found that, in general, pitch is more sensitive to structural and geometric variations than plunge and for the wings examined in this study, pitch has a larger RMS response than plunge. Also, swept forward wings tend to be more sensitive than swept back and in general, have a slightly larger RMS. Overall, sweep itself appears to have little affect on the gust response itself. In addition, judicious combinations of structural and geometric parameters could affect over an order of magnitude change in the RMS response. However, for both swept back and swept forward wings, for variations in R (= EIIGJ), W (Cross Coupling Factor), and AR (Aspect Ratio), the goal of increasing the open-loop instability speed and the goal of decreasing both the pitch and plunge RMS, in general, conflict, indicating the strong interaction between the structure and geometry on the gust response of a finite span wing.
