This must be derived from an existing velocity model, which is normally estimated using ray‐based methods such as classical velocity analysis or reflection tomography. These models typically contain sharp contrasts (e.g. at water—sediment or sediment—salt boundaries) that must be handled carefully during model conversion in order to avoid introducing artifacts into any subsequent modeling or imaging results. This paper describes a method for rapid generation of three‐dimensional gridded anisotropic velocity models that accounts correctly for the subsample positioning of complex structural features that describe sharp contrasts in the seismic medium. Applications to large‐scale modeling, interactive modeling, migration algorithms and inversion are also described.Permalink: https://doi.org/10.1190/1.3513461FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByFinite-difference modelling of 2-D wave propagation in the vicinity of dipping interfaces: a comparison of anti-aliasing and equivalent medium approaches28 October 2021 | Geophysical Journal International, Vol. 229, No. 1Anisotropic elastic finite-difference modeling of sources and receivers on Lebedev gridsErik F.
