- W2332427424 abstract "Petrova arizonensis (Heinrich) infests new growth of pinyon, Pinus edulis Engelm. Larval activity kills the shoots and disrupts normal tree growth. A pitch nodule forms at the entry point and serves to protect the larva. Infestations are heaviest in the upper portion of the trees. Up to 70% of the shoots were damaged on some trees. Heavily infested trees are deformed but not killed. P. arizonensis has a one-year life cycle, overwintering as larvae inside the pitch nodules. Pupation occurs in the spring, inside the nodules. Adults emerge in midsummer over a period of about one month. Eggs are laid on new shoots, usually on the inner side of the needle sheaths. Larvae begin feeding on needle tissue, then they progress to the new shoot where the pitch nodule is formed. At least 2 species of braconid parasites are associated with P. arizonensis." @default.
