- W2332525101 abstract "G EORGE Washington was America's foremost hero until after the Civil War. He stood first in the hearts of his countrymen regardless of their political affiliations. Leaders of thought in both the North and the South called upon the name of Washington in their appeals for national unity. His authority was invoked in matters of controversy: he had been opposed to the extension of slavery, and his Farewell Address gave emphatic counsel against sectionalism and disunion. On the other hand, he was himself a Southerner and a slaveholder; the South had no intention of repudiating the greatest of all great Virginians. A British observer wrote in i86o that love and veneration for Washington's name had remained and doubtless would remain deep-seated in the heart of every true American; yet it was evident that not all turned to the great man's Farewell Address with unqualified enthusiasm and conviction.' The present study is concerned with the various ways in which Americans found a place for Washington in their dialectic at a critical time. Most of the selections considered are from literature which is not primarily political although a few political speeches have been included. Washington's actions as well as his words had made him a powerful symbol of national unity, and the American speaker or writer who invoked his name was confident of its effect.2 As early as i833 one of Washington's letters was quoted in a magazine to bolster an argument against the position of the South Carolina nullifiers.3 Nine years later some Lines on the Statue of Washington at the Capitol expressed hope that the statue would exert the same unifying influence that the man" @default.
