- W2332669143 abstract "The best way to characterize the philosophy of William James is to say that it is basically deeply rooted in the blues. It is the soulful expression of someone who has paid his dues; someone who, like old wagonwheels, has been through it all; and, like good blues, the aim of his philosophy is therapeutic. While its immediate aim is to keep him sane and non-suicidal-to help him make it through the night-its larger one is to help him find his way to physical and spiritual health. In this respect he is very much in the Nietzschean mold, as is Wittgenstein also in my opinion. (The deep difference between James and Dewey is that Dewey couldn't sing the blues if his life depended on it.) James's theme song is Many Selves Blues. Part of the problem is that James is astonishingly complex and multi-faceted. He has a passion to be all things, to feel and understand everything. (Sometimes I think he succeeded!) Within him are all these different selves, each hungering after full actualization, but, having only finite time and resources, some of them must be denied or slighted. This gives rise to the Actualization Blues, since every actualization denies an infinite number of possibilities that could have occurred in its place. (Maybe this was the deep cause of his notorious impatience and restlessness, which might explain his continual, almost obsessional, use of the open doors and lowering of the dam metaphors.) But far more serious is that the competing demands of these different selves are due to a serious rift within the man himself, this inspiring Divided Self Blues. Thanks to Ralph Barton Perry's masterpiece," @default.
