- W2332798503 abstract "In Ireland's New Worlds, Malcolm Campbell argues that historians need to pay more attention to the national and local contexts into which the Irish immigrated in order to understand the totality of the Irish migrant experience. To make his case, he offers a comparison of the political, economic, and social integration of Irish immigrants in the United States and Australia. Campbell begins by demonstrating how the different economies of Australia and the United States in the nineteenth century led to divergent experiences for Irish migrants. While Irish Americans saw their fortunes fall as the United States shifted to a market economy, Irish Australians experienced an increased demand for their labor as the convict labor system gave way to a pastoral economy. Campbell next presents case studies to show how Irish migrants adapted in comparable regions in both nations. For instance, the Pacific regions of Eastern Australia and California shared many qualities, such as fluid social structures and anti-Asian sentiment, which allowed Irish immigrants more mobility than they enjoyed in other regions, particularly the United States East Coast. The final chapters explore how Irish Americans and Irish Australians participated in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century debates over home rule, World War I, the Easter Rebellion, and the Irish civil war. First- and second-generation Irish in both countries felt pulled into these controversies but differed in how they engaged the issues. When the Irish nationalist politician John Redmond toured both nations to gain support for home rule, he found a much more responsive audience among Irish Australians than Irish Americans, who veered toward the radical Sinn Fein." @default.
