- W2333008144 abstract "Hybrid or bi-materials (e.g., wood-FRP and concrete-FRP) are increasingly used in structural applications, and the integrity and strength of the bi-material interfaces are of great concerns. An inadequate interface bond strength and integrity may lead to premature failure of bi-material bonded interfaces, and therefore, a need exists to develop efficient test methods to characterize the bond strength of the adhesive at the adherend-composite interface. In this study, the shear mode (mode-II) fatigue fracture of bi-material bonded interface (wood-FRP) using a unique linear tapered end-notched flexure (TENF) specimen is presented. A tapered beam on elastic foundation (TBEF) model developed for design and analysis of the TENF specimens is briefly introduced. A combined analytical and experimental fracture mechanics method is developed to evaluate the fracture fatigue behavior of wood-FRP bonded interfaces under mode-II constant cyclic loading conditions. The possible effects of loading variables (i.e., load ratio, waveform and frequency) on crack propagation rate are investigated. By applying the compliance method with the unique feature of TENF specimen (i.e., a constant compliance rate change) and modifying the original Paris Law equation, the fatigue fracture behavior of wood-FRP interface bond-line under mode-II loading is effectively evaluated. A modified Paris Law equation is proposed to include both the frequency and load ratio effects. The proposed mode-II fatigue fracture testing methodology using the unique TENF specimen can be used effectively to characterize the bi-material interface in general and provide the fatigue life prediction of hybrid materials." @default.
