- W2333108608 abstract "Seamus Heaney’s “Poor Man’s Death” was published in 1963 in The Dubliner, and never collected in a volume of poems.1 Here, Heaney addresses the loss of an unnamed man, a neighbor. (This is one of the poet’s earliest elegies and prefigures the way he will engage with the subject over the following fifty years.) Heaney must have had his reasons for not including it in Death of a Naturalist (1966). But I think it worth looking over, to see if it adds anything to our sense of him, or to the concerns of the earlier work. Note the word that opens the poem and the sharp cut of the first line break: What frames this poem is the collection of neighbors; their actions and presence give dignity to the dead man, one who would otherwise, we suspect, be offered little respect. It is the poor man’s placement within the community that provides him with recognition, even if it comes too late. When we read “Neighbors collected,” we assume that they have collected themselves, as neighbors, as grief collects the grieving community. Here, however, the neighbors (including the poet himself, one gathers) also collect “money.” The transcendent notion of community—which persists through and above bodies, just as the memory of the dead lasts despite the death of the body—is grounded in the practical, the material need for money, for a coffin, for burial." @default.
