- W2333333827 abstract "Hamlet is not the only Danish mystery. The recent resurgence of interest in small states has drawn attention to some unique features of Danish political and economic development: the early liberation of the serfs, the preservation of an independent peasantry, and an adjustment strategy that met the Great Depression of 1873-96 with agricultural innovation and economic liberalism rather than with trade protection. But existing attempts to account for differences in the pace, sectoral emphasis, and political consequences of modernization and industrialization explain only pieces of the Danish story. The logic that informs these existing explanations fails when applied to the full range of Danish political and economic history as it played out during the transition from feudalism to industrialization. Existing explanations for developmental differences can be divided into two principal groups. Authors like Gerschenkron, Kurth, and O'Donnell emphasize market position, arguing that late industrializing nations face stiffer competition and higher start-up costs so that central governments must finance, plan, and protect developing industries.' They contend, for instance, that hypertropic central organizations like those in Tsarist Russia, Wilhelmine Germany, and contemporary Latin America represent responses to the problem of shaping national development to meet the international market challenges of late industrialization." @default.
