The condition is considerably affected by the sensor configuration and the source grid that contains the dipoles to be estimated. Our objective is to determine grid parameters that provide a relatively high condition of L with respect to practical requirements. In this study, different 2D source grids and the PTB 304 SQUID vector magnetometer system are modelled as they are applied for reconstructions of magnetic nanoparticle distributions in practice. To investigate the influence of the grid on the condition of L, we varied the following grid parameters: number of sources, grid extension, directions of the dipolar sources and displacements of the grid below the sensor area. We used a modified condition number that incorporates information on all singular values to measure the condition of L. Our results indicate that the condition of L degrades by increasing the number of sources. For the overdetermined inverse problem the condition number is considerably improved when the number of sources is reduced. In case of an underdetermined problem, increasing the number of sources impairs the condition only slightly. If the grid extension is smaller than the sensor array, the condition number is clearly worse than for grids exceeding the sensor area. Furthermore, source dipoles directed towards the sensor array (Z direction) provide the best condition. A displacement of the grid with respect to the sensor array does not have a relevant effect. For our application we can conclude that the source grid should be 2–4 cm larger than the sensor area in each direction. Since our problem is usually underdetermined, the number of sources has a relatively small effect on the condition. The dipole orientations and thus the direction of the excitation field should not deviate more than 35° from the Z direction.
