- W2333655811 abstract "The proposed wells for in-situ volatile extraction are a means to efficiently extract water ice from heterogeneous subsurface deposits on the Moon, NEOs or Mars. This approach utilizes heat from the Sun (or other source), to vaporize subsurface frost, heterogeneously distributed within the regolith. The water (or other volatile) vapor is transported to a surface collection vessel where it is condensed (and collected). The method does not involve mining and extracting regolith before removing the frozen volatiles; resulting in potential energy/cost savings over approaches that require mining. The approach does not involve construction of a gas-tight pressurized dome over the region of regolith to be processed – an improvement over other proposed approaches. The only drilling required is a well-bore drill hole. The proposed volatile-extraction-wells can function without pumps, compressors or other gas-moving equipment, relying instead on vapor pressure, diffusive transport and convection of the vaporized volatiles for transport to the collection location(s). Interior pressure in the borehole is controlled by a surface-mounted collection/condensation system, and the rate at which heat is delivered to down-hole heat-exchangers. These volatile extraction wells could represent a significant advance in extraction efficiency for recovery of frozen volatiles in subsurface deposits on the Moon, Mars, or other extraterrestrial bodies." @default.
