- W2333723265 abstract "Carbonates are highly susceptible to physical, chemical, and biological alterations. The effects of these processes on seismic response are manifold: alterations complicate the trends between geophysical observables and measurable rock properties, violate the assumptions of rock physics models that treat rock‐fluid coupling as purely mechanical, and hamper 4D seismic predictions. Carbonates are primarily classified based on the presence of finer fractions such as carbonate matrix and/or cement, which likely control transport and seismic properties as well as reactivity. Quantifying the amount of these finer phases is thus fundamental to understand the complex rock‐fluid coupling in carbonate rocks. In this paper, we show a method to quantify the fraction of micrite from micro‐CT images and relate it to the elastic‐wave velocity, porosity, and permeability of carbonate rocks. Results show that micrite makes the rock stiffer and less permeable. In contrast, its removal from intergranular macropores (for example, by progressive leaching of the matrix) increases porosity and reduces rock stiffness, both of which reduce velocity. Because microporosity within micrite does not contribute to fluid flow, decreasing micrite content correlates well with increasing permeability. Micrite‐rich samples were also saturated with carbonated water to promote dissolution. The evolution of velocity mimics fairly well the velocity decrease with decreasing micrite content." @default.
