- W2333735306 abstract "Slopewash sediments accumulating in limestone rock-shelters have been used to reconstruct prehistoric hillslope erosion rates in the Simbu region of Papua New Guinea. Data on accumulation rates, with sediment chemistry and magnetic properties, suggest that during the late Pleistocene erosion rates were minimal under stable primary forest. Horticultural intensification in the last 6,000 years has resulted in dramatically increased rates of hillslope erosion, especially in the last 300-400 years. The latter change may be associated with the introduction of sweet potato as a staple crop in swidden horticulture. A derived model of limestone soil stability suggests that soil buffering capacity may be critical in resisting irreversible soil degradation and slope stripping. Both long fallow and diversified swidden cropping may reduce the risk of such irreversible erosional hazards. RESUME Traces dirosion prihistorique dans des abris sous roche en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinde. Les sediments accumules dans des abris sous roche calcaire ont ete utilises pour evaluer les taux d'erosion prehistoriques dans la region du Simbu en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinee. Les donnees sur les taux d'accumulation des sediments, ainsi que leur composition chimique et leurs proprietes magnetiques, suggerent qu'a la fin du pleistocene les taux d'6rosion etaient minimes dans un environnement de foret primitive stable. L'intensification de l'horticulture lors des six mille dernieres annees a entraind un accroissement considerable de l'erosion, en particulier au cours des trois ou quatre cent dernieres annies. Ce dernier changement pourrait etre lie ' l'introduction de la patate douce comme culture de base dans une horticulture sur brfilis. Un moddle base sur la stabilitd du sol calcaire suggdre que la capacitd d'amortissement du sol pourrait etre cruciale pour ralentir le processus irrevocable de ddgradation du sol et de ddnudation des flancs de c6teaux. De longues pdriodes de jachdre et une culture diversifide sur brfilis pourraient rdduire les risques d'une erosion irrdvocable." @default.
