- W23337853 abstract "Eight groups of six sheep, live months old and reared parasite-free from birth were used. One group (CI) was killed initially as control. Four groups were fed ad libitum a complete ruminant diet. One (ALC) was control and the remainder were dosed with either three (AL3), eight (AL8) or 14 (AL14) Fasciola hepatica metacercariae on five days each week for 22 weeks. Sheep in the remaining three groups (PF3, PF8 and PF14) were pair-fed with individuals in the respective infected group. The sheep were killed after 40 weeks and the empty bodies and those of the CI sheep analysed for water, fat, nitrogen, calcium and phosphorus contents. There were no clinical signs in any animal. Mean (hike burdens of groups AL3, A1.8 and AL14 were 87, 157 and 233 respectively, and extensive liver damage occurred in groups AL8 and AL14. Flukes were smaller and daily egg production per mature tluke lower in group AL14 than in AL3. A 15 per cent reduction in food intake occurred in all infected groups and was responsible for a 16 per cent reduction in gross efficiency of utilisation of metabolisable energy (ME), an 8 per cent reduction in protein deposition and an 18 per cent reduction in bone mineral (calcium) deposition in the carcase. There was no specific effect of fascioliasis on digestibility of food dry matter or nitrogen, efficiency of utilisation of ME or skeletal mineralisation, but there was a tendency for reduction in protein deposition. The mean liver weight (g/kg body weight) in groups AL3, AL8 and AL14 was 19·2, 21·2 and 27·1 respectively, compared with a mean value of 14·7 in the control groups. The possible role of liver hypertrophy in host adaptation to fascioliasis is discussed. Ilypoalhuminaemia and hyperglobulinaemia developed in all the infected groups, the extent being related to the intake of metacercariae. There were no significant effects on serum calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, urea, iron or bilirubin concentrations or total iron-binding capacity." @default.
