- W2333821745 abstract "The use of deployable composite-tape-spring-based trusses is desirable for large precision structures due to low mass, self deployment, high stiffness-to-mass ratios, and high packing efficiencies. The technology offers the possibility of decreasing the complexity of systems required to deploy and maintain shape of large structures to sub-micron-level optical tolerances through inherent simplicity. In addition to the stringent requirements for deployment repeatability for optical systems, the truss must exhibit dynamic stability during operation to provide acceptable imaging performance. This experimental work examines the pre- and post-deployment dynamic response of multiple composite-tape-spring systems in a tripod structure consistent with the geometry of a secondary mirror support for a Cassegrain telescope with a 1.0 m aperture. The results for these conservative, non-optimal designs show no degradation of stiffness with deployment cycle and so further support the continued development and use of this technology." @default.
