- W2333965718 abstract "The objective of the present paper is to validate the results of the energy balance analysis by comparing the estimated performance characteristics of the Ram Accelerator with the results of available CFD numerical calculations and available experimental data. The analysis is based on the balance of the propulsive energy acting on the projectile against the drag work of the projectile in flight. This analysis shows that the acceleration of the projectile and its maximum velocity are directly proportional to the propulsive efficiency and inversely proportional to the drag coefficient of the projectile. This is validated by the CFD calculations that indicate that the thrust on the projectile diminishes as the projectile velocity increases. Therefore, as the thrust is reduced until it equals the drag, the projectile acceleration must diminish to zero. Then, the projectile reaches its maximum velocity as shown in the energy balance calculations. The results of the analysis are also validated by the experimental data obtained at the University of Washington (UW) and at the French-German Institute at Saint-Louis (ISL). The tests in the Ram Accelerators of the UW indicate a maximum velocity of about 1.15 to 1.2 times the C-J detonation velocity and those of ISL indicate a maximum velocity of about 1.33 to 1.57 times the C-J detonation velocity. The maximum velocity ratio, VmJVa , calculated from the solutions of the inviscid Euler equations is about 2. The maximum velocity measured in the ISL and UW tests are lower than the maximum velocity calculated from the inviscid flow equations. The inviscid flow calculations are expected to underestimate the drag of the projectile during its flight in the tube. The addition of the effects of viscous flow will increase the estimation of the drag of the projectile considerably. Therefore, the maximum velocity ratio, V,TM* / Va , for the projectile in the viscous reacting flow is expected to be lower than the value of 2 obtained in the inviscid flow calculations. It is therefore concluded that the results of the numerical calculations and the experimental data are in very good qualitative agreement and are in reasonable quantitative agreement with the results of the energy balance analysis. Furthermore, this analysis enables a very systematic study of the controlling parameters of the projectile performance in the Ram Accelerator." @default.
