- W2334002661 abstract "In a dissertation study, Sehulster observed that the variable of frequency of the statement in a semantic domain was a stronger determinant of reaction time than the laboratory, episodic variable of paragraph length. Subjects learned passages containing both well known, or high frequency, information and new, or low frequency, information. The present study replicated the author's earlier study with shorter paragraphs and with more precise measurement of the semantic domain. Subjects gave and answers in a questionnaire containing 104 true and false statements and then rated their answers according to the degree of confidence they had for each answer. One month later, individual subjects learned one of several paragraphs about Washington and then verified 35 statements from the paragraph and questionnaire domains. Verification latencies were significantly related to the confidence rating given each statement on the questionnaire task; latencies were not related to the length of the paragraph learned in the laboratory. These data suggested that conditions exist in which semantic memory factors have an influence on reaction time that is greater than that of temporary structural features of the learning set." @default.
