- W2334170925 abstract "In a previous work we studied the pressure, density and temperature fluctuations in compressible turbulent plane channel flow, using DNS results, and calculated budgets of the transport equations for the variances of pressure (p′2), density (ρ′2) and temperature (T ′′2). The study concerned fully-developed compressible turbulent channel flow, over isothermal-walls based on low-Reynolds-number DNS computations, both at low-subsonic (MCL = 0.34) and supersonic (MCL = 1.5) conditions. Results indicate that the near-wall behaviour of ρrms/ρ, p ′ rms/p, and T ′ rms/T is largely independent of Mach-number, although the fluctuation levels scale with (MCL) . This apparent compressibility, even at the low-Mach-number limit may be related to the isothermal-wall boundary-condition γpw = ā 2 wρ ′ w, which strongly couples ρ ′ and p, in the near-wall region. Even at the limit MCL −→ 0, the ration ρw/pw remains unchanged, suggesting that the equations for p′2 and for ρ′2 must be studied together. Budgets of the transport-equations for ρ′2, p′2, and T ′′2 were obtained from the DNS computations. Comparison of previously proposed models for ρ′2-transport with the DNS results suggested ways for improving these models, especially in the near-wall region. In particular we started evaluating the closure for the density-variance ρ′2, proposed as early as 1991 by Taulbee and VanOsdol. This earlier closure, which was developed at a time when compressible near-wall DNS data were not available, was successfull in the overall prediction of ρ′2, but is, expectedly, not completely accurate in the a priori term-by-term prediction of the DNS results. The present paper concentrates on the closure of the density-variance equation. Various previous proposals are evaluated a priori against DNS results. All these previous closures were proposed with coefficients which were not fully optimized in the near-wall region. The use of a generalized-gradient closure for the massflux ρui = ρ ′u i = −ρu′′ i , fits rather satisfactorily available data, as far as the production of ρ′2 is concerned." @default.
