- W2334183644 abstract "It has long been known that American churches were a major source of pro-League of Nations sentiment in 1919, when the organization's covenant was debated throughout the nation. Yet, contrary to conventional wisdom, there were strong dissenters, who are ably described by Markku Ruotsila. He distinguishes between two groups of theological opponents of the League. There were evangelicals, whom he defines as those who took the Bible literally and saw Christ's redeeming work as the only way to eternal salvation. There were also Fundamentalists, whom he sees as stressing dispensational premillenialism, a doctrine centering on Christ's physical return and the establishment of a thousand-year reign. Antagonism took place on many grounds. Dispensationalists claimed that any world organization foreshadowed the world empire of the antichrist. The World Christian Fundamentals Association, led by the Minnesota Baptist William Bell Riley, explicitly opposed ratification of the League covenant, juxtaposing “false prophesies” of world progress with the promise of the returning Christ. Conservative Calvinists, located in Presbyterian and Reformed bodies, argued that only the church and the gospel could really change the world. Conversely, any project made by human hands could never create a more perfect society. Ruotsila finds a surprising anti-League consensus among American Lutherans, who were not so much governed by ethnic allegiance (though many were German Americans) as by an otherworldly theology; no abstract political system could replace the crucial doctrine of justification by faith alone." @default.
