- W2334263121 abstract "ONE of the least understood of Nathaniel Hawthorne's publishing ventures is his editing of the Journal of an African Cruiser (1845) for his friend and patron, Horatio Bridge. To many scholars, it marks a brief, insignificant episode in Hawthorne's career, analogous to his editing, as a younger man, The American Magazine of Useful and Entertaining Knowledge. A closer look at the Journal and the circumstances of its publication not only sheds light on Hawthorne's professional career as a writer, but also helps to illuminate one of the heated political issues of the 1840'sAfrican colonization as a viable alternative for free blacks. In 1843, Hawthorne, now married and with the Twice Told Tales, the Boston Custom House, and Brook Farm behind him, was still seeking a political appointment and trying to publish a new book. This was one of the most financially trying periods in Hawthorne's life. Efforts by a number of groups to make him postmaster of Salem had not been successful. While Hawthorne's friends like Thoreau and his activist sister-in-law Elizabeth Peabody were critical of his involvement with politicians, the Democratic party hierarchy was suspicious of a story writer who had dabbled in the communal experiment at Brook Farm in 1841. But Hawthorne resisted Elizabeth Peabody's efforts to convert him to abolitionism. Like his Bowdoin College friends and fellow Democrats, Horatio Bridge and Franklin Pierce, Hawthorne deplored the existence of slavery, but had no high opinion of blacks. His political task was to find a position on slavery that disapproved of the concept but permitted room for a temporary toleration of the practice. That compromise was colonization.
