- W2334293142 abstract "ars and publishers only since the publication of Camara Laye's L'Enfant Noir and Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart barely thirty years ago. In contrast with the long existence of the novel form in Europe and also with the long evolution of complex patterns of the novel form in Europe, the relatively new emergence of the form in Africa tended to create at about the time of L'Enfant Noir and Things Fall Apart the notion, first, that the novel form was new to the African continent and, second, that it had been imported from Europe in the baggage of Western colonialists, missionaries, and educators. Under the circumstances, critics of the African novel have tended to suggest that, all things being equal, an African novelist would not have had as much experience of the novel form within his African cultural setting as, say, a European novelist. Thus, the trend of critical opinion has been to suggest that African novelists are, relatively speaking, at the beginner's stage in their handling of the novel form while the average European novelist is at the advanced stage. That idea seemed to have been in Achebe's mind when he said Writing of the kind I do is relatively new in my part of the world.'" @default.
