- W2334294813 abstract "Certain mistletoes (Loranthaceae) in southern India have their flowers pollinated and seeds dispersed by one vector species, namely, the flowerpecker, which is a specialised frugivorous bird which feeds almost exclusively on mistletoe fruits. This is a situation in which both flowering and fruiting events would be likely to influence each other. The study indicated that the characteristics of the flowerpecker pollinated mistletoes differed from the others in the following respects: the fruiting times overlapped with the next flowering season, the flowers were rather inconspicuous and greenish in color, and the reward was offered once. This contrasted with the mistletoe species pollinated by other birds in which the flowering and fruiting times were not closely tied; the flowers had a strong color signal, were usually red or pink, and the nectar supply was continuous. This indicated that the flowers in the flowerpecker-pollinated species had either developed characteristics which were similar to those of the fruit in order to attract the mostly frugivorous pollinator, or both flowers and fruits had developed common characteristics in order to attract a common vector. The former case could be described as 'facultative mimicry,' in that the reward offered by the flower is possibly less than that offered by the fruit, thus leading it to mimic the fruit. In the latter instance the rewards offered by both might complement each other. CHARACTERISTICS OF FLOWER AND FRUIT have been examined in the context of pollination and seed dispersal (Faegri and van der Pijl 1971, van der Pijl 1969). Generally coevolution between plants and pollinators, and between plants and seed dispersal agents have been examined separately as if flower and fruit characteristics evolve independently of each other. An instance in which both these events are likely to influence each other would be when the same vector is involved in both processes. I report here such an example involving mistletoes and flowerpeckers in southern India. This study, part of a doctoral dissertation on the pollination ecology of mistletoes in the Nilgiri Hills of southern India, examined the coevolutionary patterns between the mistletoes and the birds that pollinate their flowers. One of the bird species was the flowerpecker of the family Dicaeidae, a specialised frugivore that also fed on mistle-" @default.
