- W2334356909 abstract "The use of blunt-body-spikes or aerospikes will likely re-emerge for a particular class of future missile designs. The present study evaluates and compares existing state-of-the-art Computational Fluid Dynamics codes that may be employed in an engineering study of future aerospike configurations. Steady results from numerical simulations of compressible flow around nose-spiked blunt bodies using two state-of-the-art Computational Fluid Dynamics codes are presented. Both CFD++ (Metacomp Technologies, Inc.) and Cobalt (Cobalt Solutions, LLC) are density based, coupled formulation CFD codes that have been extensively tested for the numerical simulation of hypersonic flows. Two nose-spiked blunt body configurations that were the subject of previous numerical simulations and wind tunnel studies have been selected. Surface pressure, temperature, and aerodynamic coefficients are compared to data from a previous numerical study that uses the commercial code Fluent (Ansys, Inc.) and validated against the corresponding wind tunnel experimental data. The study highlights the predictive capabilities of three state-of-the-art commercial codes (CFD++, Cobalt, and Fluent) for hypersonic, turbulent flows around nose-spiked blunt bodies." @default.
