- W2334632919 abstract "Background Keloids are excessive scar formation and various cells are involved. Many studies focusing on the histologic feature of keloids, however, have shown discordant results without consideration of architectural aspect of collagen structure. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate schematic illustration of collagen architecture of auricular keloids, and to analyze them on the morphometric basis. Materials and methods Thirty-nine surgically excised auricular keloids were histomorphologically analyzed and three distinctive structural parts, keloidal collagen, organizing collagen, and proliferating core collagen (PCC), were identified and mapped in every case. Cellularity of fibroblasts, blood vessel density, degree of inflammatory cells infiltration, and mast cells counts using Massons trichrome, van Giesons, toluidine blue stain, and immunohistochemical stains for CD31 and actin were analyzed in each part. Morphometric analysis on these parameters was done with representative images by Image J. Results Morphometric analysis of the three parts revealed statistically significant differences on fibroblast cellularity, blood vessel density, degree of inflammatory cells and mast cells infiltration. All parameters were exceedingly high in whorling hypercellular fibrous nodules in PCC. Conclusion Among three morphologically distinctive parts, PCC might serve as a proliferating center of keloids and might be a key portion for tumor growth and recurrence." @default.
