- W2334697056 abstract "Maps play an important, although arguably a declining, role in geographical research. They are regarded primarily as vehicles for communicating geographical information, most frequently in the form of small-scale, black and white illustra- tions accompanying text. In determining the information to be communicated to the geographer using maps, the use to which maps will be put is a first consideration. Ways in which maps are read by geographers are crucial determinants of the effectiveness of such maps. In particular, realistic map-reading tasks should be used in experimental evaluations. In designing the graphic medium itself, perceptual constraints such as figure-ground relationships, depth perception, legibility and aes- thetic balance deserve special attention. The influence of psychophysical functions on map reading is assessed. Few attempts have been made to measure information obtained from maps by map readers, but some, despite doubts, hold out some promise as devices for comparing the effectiveness of different map designs." @default.
