In addition, 42 percent of agricultural irrigation water is supplied by groundwater. Recently there has been renewed interest in the water/energy nexus. For example, the expansive growth in the development of unconventional natural gas plays has focused attention on the process of hydraulic fracturing. Natural gas provides about 22 percent of the nations energy needs, and its fraction of the nation's energy portfolio is likely to remain the same, if not perhaps expand, in the decades ahead. Shale gas potential exists in about half of the 50 states, so water issues related to production from these fields are diverse. Typically, the successful fracing of a horizontal production well requires on the order of several million gallons of water, but this is usually an acute need. However, this quantity of water can be difficult to obtain in remote areas, or in semi‐arid regions where surface water supply is limited. Also, the fracing issue has raised concerns regarding contamination of ground water supplies, both from potential contamination from the pressurized fracing process itself, or from mishandling or leakage of chemically‐treated fracturing fluids. While scientific evidence has shown that these fears are largely unfounded, public fears remain.Permalink: https://doi.org/10.1190/1.3627977FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByEnvironmental challenges in fracturing of unconventional resourcesAzra N.
