- W2334792813 abstract "Information on the nesting behavior of Oxybelus laetus Say, packardii Robertson, decorosus (Mickel), exclamans Viereck, uniglumis (L.), emarginatus Say, subcornutus Cockerell, and subulatus Robertson obtained from a study in SE United States is presented. All nested in sandy soil in usually unshaded areas and mass-provisioned their multicellular nests with paralyzed adult Diptera. Except for exclamans and uniglumis , all left their nests open while hunting. Except for subulatus , the open-nested species held their prey with their middle and hind legs and usually flew directly into their nests without landing. O. subulatus always carried the prey impaled, landed near the nest, and walked in. O. exclamans and uniglumis closed their nests when hunting. O. exclamans carried her prey with the middle and hind legs and held it under her body while digging open the entrance. O. uniglumis carried her prey both pedally (middle legs and hind legs) and impaled; the prey was always impaled while digging open the entrance. All species held the prey on the sting if forced to dig into an artificially plugged nest or if forced to walk on the ground to search for the entrance.Except for decorosus and emarginatus which collected ca. equal numbers of male and female prey, wasps showed a decided preference for male prey: laetus and packardii selected a variety of families from the suborders of higher dipterans, exclamans provisioned with male sarcophagids, subcornutus with male syrphids, subulatus with male therevids, and uniglumis with male therevids except for one. The egg bearer was found at the apex of the cell: subcornutus oviposited in a “Sphex manner,” all others in a “Crabro manner.”Ethological similarities are discussed and compared with a species-group arrangement based on morphology. O. laetus and packardii appear closely related but quite unlike other members in the morphological species-group arrangement such as bipunctatus Oliver and uniglumis. O. exclamans appears more similar to uniglumis and bipunctatus than to other known Nearctic species and should be grouped with the latter species. O. decorosus, emarginatus, and cressonii Robertson also appear to belong together in a separate group. 0. subcornutus and especially subulatus differ enough ethologically to confirm placement in separate species groups." @default.
