- W2334879085 abstract "In pea (Pisum sativum) pod (pericarp) growth requires the presence of seeds (Eeuwens and Schwabe, 1975). Developing seeds contain high levels of gibberellins (GAs)(Ingram and Browning, 1979; Ingram et al. 1985); and the seed requirement can be replaced by application of the plant hormone, GA (Eeuwens and Schwabe, 1975; Sponsel, 1982). Based on these three pieces of evidence, it has been assumed that seeds are the direct source of GAs for pericarp growth. However, Sponsel (1982) forwarded an alternative hypothesis that the presence of seeds may indirectly maintain GA biosynthesis in the pericarp. Recently Maki (1990) has shown that pericarp tissue has the ability to metabolize [2H]-GA53to [2H]-GA20and [211-GA1but only when the pericarp is intact and attached to the plant. This report describes preliminary work that tests this alternative hypothesis. These studies, which will be documented elsewhere in full, characterize the effect of seeds on GA metabolism in pea pericarp.KeywordsPisum SativumEthyl Acetate ExtractMevalonic AcidSeed RemovalPericarp TissueThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
