- W2334937090 abstract "One of the most frequently anthologized of poems, perhaps because of its comparatively short length and its apparent accessibility, is his To the Pious Memory of the Accomplisht Young Lady Mrs Anne Killigrew, Excellent in the two Sister-Arts of Poesie, and Painting. An Ode. But anyone who has examined the criticism concerning this poem (or tried to teach it) realizes that Anne Killigrew can also be quite baffling. The fundamental problem, I suppose, is that, unlike the subjects of other well-known panegyrics-those on Cromwell, or Charles II, or Congreve, for instance-Anne Killigrew's life and achievements are not particularly well known. And yet the poet praises her so eloquently and so lavishly. Critics have long recognized this problem, but, in offering various solutions to it, have focused on Killigrew's poetic talent. I say distractingly because critics have been compelled to assess Killigrew's art before knowing how to read poem, and, in doing so, they have overlooked crucial features of its production. With the recent and long overdue recovery of women writers in the Restoration and eighteenth century has come a positive reassessment of Anne Killigrew that suggests the poem is what it appears to be: an elegy. Ann Messenger's work in this vein is typical: Dryden's praise of Anne Killigrew's poetry is excessive. Funerary tributes, like Restoration dedications, always are. But despite the mixture of tones in the ode, it is not necessary to read it as comedy or irony or as a meaningless exercise in genre. It can and should be read as recognition of a poet whose artistry was remarkable for one so young. Three hundred years later, Anne Killigrew deserves our recognition too.' Other readers apparently believe the historical neglect of Killigrew is deserved: she was, at best, a very ordinary poet. For them, elegy can be read best as ironic. The ironic view was first offered by David Vieth and later elaborated upon by C. Anderson Silber. Vieth presents his interpretation in a 1965 essay where he points out how Dryden simultaneously praises and criticizes Killigrew's art. Vieth softens his views somewhat" @default.
