- W2335043991 abstract "The power of the Health Belief Model (HBM) to explain decisions to adopt preventive health behavior has been mainly supported by empirical studies in which data on beliefs and behavior were collected at the same time. Studies in which information on beliefs was collected before behavior are less common and are less supportive. The analysis presented here is based on a prospective study examining how far the HBM predicts (a) attendance at a class in breast self-examination (BSE) and (b) compliance with the education given at the class. Results from the analyses show that some dimensions of health beliefs were found to be among the best predictors of attendance. However, a large amount of the variance in both sets of analyses remained unexplained suggesting that the HBM has limited value for explaining compliance with a class in BSE. A comparative trial, which is being carried out in the United Kingdom at present (U. K. Trial of Early Detection of Breast Cancer Group, 1981), is evaluating methods for the early detection of breast cancer. One method that is being examined is breast selfexamination (BSE), and classes are being provided to teach women how to carry out this procedure regularly and effectively. The value of this program depends on gaining a high level of compliance. Compliance in this context involves both accepting the invitation to attend the class and continued adherence to the practices recommended, i. e., regular breast selfexamination following the technique recommended for the identification of breast abnormalities and the immediate seeking of professional medical care once an abnormality is detected. Preliminary analyses (Calnan et al., 1983) showed that attendance at the class was associated with a significant improvement in the practice of BSE, although only 45 percent of the women invited actually attended and only 47 percent of those who did attend were carrying out BSE satisfactorily when interviewed" @default.
