Any method of measuring attenuation from seismic data faces the difficulty that frequency‐dependent amplitude losses are also produced by scattering from heterogeneities, such as thin layers. In this paper, we adopted the 1D viscoelastic waveform inversion scheme for determining attenuation from seismic reflection and walkaway VSP data simultaneously. The joint inversion problem is solved by the damped least square method, and the inversion result is demonstrated to be successful using synthetic data. The synthetic example validates that by extracting all the information contained in the waveforms, the waveform inversion of the seismic reflection and transmission data is a power tool for estimating Q. As a test case, we also applied the method to a real seismic line and walkaway VSP data of Nanyang oilfield, central China.
