However, the impact of controlled diabetes mellitus (DM) on LUTS is still poorly understood. METHODS A prospective database on 905 first-visit patients with LUTS/BPH from April 2010 to June 2012 was used. After excluding those with comorbidities that may affect urinary symptom, 139 patients with DM were selected, and 1 to 1 selected controls were also extracted by propensity scoring matched for age and prostate volume. A total of 278 patients were analyzed, and their mean age was 65.3±9.1 years. RESULTS There were no differences in age, prostate volume, voided volume and maximal flow rate between the two groups, whereas residual urine volume showed a significant difference between patients and controls (29.3±27.0 mL vs. 22.5±23.3, p=0.028). A significant difference of total International Prostatic Symptom Score was noted between patients and controls (17.80±7.60, 15.88±7.05, p=0.031). Patients with DM showed higher storage (7.45±3.21 vs 6.58±3.11, p=0.024) and post-voiding (2.57±1.49 vs. 2.19±1.59, p=0.045) symptom scores compared to controls, whereas no differences were noted in voiding symptom scores (p=0.104). Among storage symptoms, patients with DM showed higher frequency (p=0.010) and nocturia (p=0.003) scores, while there were no differences in urgency scores. Moreover, Overactive Bladder Symptom Score showed significant differences between patients and controls (p=0.006) (Table 1). CONCLUSIONS Diabetic patients with LUTS/BPH showed increased residual urine volume and greater storage and post-micturition symptoms than age/prostate volume-matched controls. This disparity in storage symptoms is thought to arise mainly from frequency and nocturia due to polyuria rather than urgency. Table 1.
