- W2335441569 abstract "Degradation and microcracking in hygrothermal cycling environments seen by advanced systems are problems for composite materials. The problems are complex, in both their physical mechanisms and in the analysis and testing necessary to understand them. An existing understanding of degradation mechanisms, founded on mechanism-based models, is used here to simulate the response of composite laminates to two aspects of a typical use environment: moisture cycling that affects only thin layers near the surface and edges of exposed laminates, and thermal cycles that affect the entire laminate. In each case, results of models are compared to existing data, and, via parametric analyses, the models are used to design tests to accelerate the degradation." @default.
