- W2335511032 abstract "Security and development have become a critical theme in global politics, and hence attracted greater attention from academia and policy makers. However, few researchers have addressed important questions about the relationship between the two. For example, what objects are prioritized in the contexts of security and/or development? What links security and development, apart from armed conflicts and failed states? This timely collection of 16 chapters by academics and practitioners provides some useful answers and insights. The editors and contributors succeed in largely avoiding the complex theoretical language of their disciplines. This well-designed volume features seven thematic sections, each of which is composed of three parts: one chapter takes a development-focused perspective that follows a ‘market-oriented paradigm’; another chapter takes on a security-focused perspective that works with a ‘statist paradigm’; while each section is accompanied by a commentary from the editors. The contributors review the pros and cons of advocacy studies, operational studies, and policy-focused studies in the context of conflict, examine how security and development intersect in the context of global politics, and focus on seven critical issue areas: aid, humanitarian assistance, governance, health, poverty, trade and resources, and demography. For the authors, the security–development relationship is ‘selectively co-constitutive’; together, security and development determine outcomes in ‘certain contexts or with respect to particular issues’ (p.314)." @default.
