RALP is promoted as having potential advantages over open radical prostatectomy (RP). We reviewed how hospitals in our Section promote RALP on their patient-oriented websites, specifically with regards to the risks of erectile dysfunction (ED) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). METHODS 205 hospitals in our Section were listed on www.davinciprostatectomy.com as performing RALP. Hospital websites were analyzed for (1) information about post-RALP ED and SUI, (2) any quoted post-operative potency rates, (3) any comparison of RALP with RP, and (4) any information regarding post-prostatectomy penile rehabilitation strategies. RESULTS 95 of 205 websites did not mention ED as a risk of RALP. 55 of the 110 that mentioned ED did not compare RALP to RP. Of the 55 sites that compared RALP to RP, only 5 stated that there is no difference in ED following RALP or RP, while 50 stated or implied that RALP has better potency rates or an earlier return of potency than RP. Only 1 website provided an expected ED rate for RALP, and only 5 websites mentioned post-prostatectomy penile rehabilitation. 94 of 205 websites did not mention SUI as a risk of RALP. 53 of the 111 that mentioned SUI did not compare to RP. Of the 58 sites that compared RALP to RP, only 5 stated that there is no difference in SUI following RALP or RP, while 53 stated or implied that RALP has better continence rates or a faster return to continence than RP. CONCLUSIONS The majority of hospital websites that promote RALP either do not mention the risks of post-operative ED and SUI, or they provide a comparison that favors RALP over open prostatectomy without supporting documentation. Patients seeking treatment for prostate cancer need to be properly counseled and accurately informed of the risks of post-RALP ED and SUI. © 2012 by American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetails Volume 187Issue 4SApril 2012Page: e464 Advertisement Copyright & Permissions© 2012 by American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.MetricsAuthor Information David Paolone Madison, WI More articles by this author Daniel Williams Madison, WI More articles by this author Expand All Advertisement Advertisement PDF downloadLoading ..." @default.
