- W2335624213 abstract "One of the most important concepts in evolutionary theory is that of fitness, definable simply as the average ability of carriers of a given genotype to pass on their genes to the next generation, relative to the abilities of carriers of other genotypes. Very little experimentation has been devoted to direct measurements of fitness, although the need has been emphasized recently by Buzzati-Traverso (1955), and Dobzhansky (1955) in general terms; Penrose (1949), and Reed (1959) for human populations; and Knight and Robertson (1957), and Wallace (1959) for Drosophila populations. Although fitness may be considered in terms of its components, some means of estimating it as a single parameter would be more desirable. Approaches to this problem have been made by Carson (1957, 1958), Knight and Robertson (1957), Wallace (1959), and Latter and Robertson (1962). A model to describe the relative fitness of populations where one cannot define the genotypes of individuals was presented by Claringbold and Barker (1961), together with its statistical evaluation. If two or more populations of Drosophila melanogaster are each placed in competition with flies from the same population of Drosophila simulans, their relative fitnesses can be estimated from the rate of change in the frequencies of the two species. The experimental evaluation of this model is presented here." @default.
