- W2335960018 abstract "Event Abstract Back to Event Microscale bioengineering of chronic diseases Shuichi Takayama1 1 University of Michigan, Biomedical Engineering Department and Macromolecular Science and Engineering Program, United States Chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cardiovascular disease account for 7 out of 10 deaths and over 85% of healthcare costs in the US. While there are a variety of causes of these diseases, lifestyle is a large factor. Initially small changes in our body’s cells or cell microenvironment accumulate over time in a viscous cycle that result in illness. This presentation will describe a number of organ-on-a-chip devices and biomaterials that aim to recapitulate an aspect of these detrimental cell - micro-environment interactions to enhance our understanding of these diseases at the cellular level, and provide a platform to help accelerate therapeutics and diagnostics development. Some themes related to chronic diseases that will be discussed include microfluidic studies of tissue disorganization and extracellular matrix invasion, microscale collagen contraction assays for study of fibrosis, micro-printing of inflammatory biomaterials, and analysis of biorhythmic dysfunction.
