- W2335970147 abstract "Sierra Leone’s recent decade-long civil war was remarkable not only for the horrific and often seemingly random violence perpetrated on civilian populations, but as well for the large-scale involvement of children and youth as armed participants in the conflict. In considering the underlying and proximate factors that led to the complete collapse of human security and the engagement of children as combatants and victims in this conflict, it is clear that the role of education was both significant and complex. Indeed, as a system inextricably linked to a failed state, public education is widely regarded as having contributed to the deterioration of human security in Sierra Leone and to the extraordinary participation of children in conflict. Yet after 11 years of conflict, and with the country struggling to come to terms with its nationwide civic trauma and with the enormous challenge of social and institutional reconstruction, education is now ironically regarded as playing an important role in fostering peace building and national reconciliation. Hopes for education today in many respects mirror similar aspirations and expectations that underscored educational expansion during the years following Sierra Leone’s independence." @default.
