- W2336014071 abstract "Summary Ten cases of cryptococcosis (torulosis) are described to illustrate some of the difficulties in the diagnosis and management of this disease. Seven patients had nervous involvement with headache the commonest symptom, and seven had pulmonary involvement. Skin lesions occurred in two cases, and a bone lesion in one case. Demonstration of the organism in the cerebro‐spinal fluid was the most useful diagnostic measure (six cases). Sputum examination provided the diagnoses in one case, and a smear from the skin lesions in two cases. There was a reasonable possibility that the infection had been transmitted from patient to patient in one case. This has not previously been recorded. Seven patients were treated with amphotericin B, with improvement or remission in six. Two patients had remissions after the resection of a pulmonary lesion. The techniques, advantages and disadvantages of intravenous and intrathecal therapy are discussed. The side effects are mainly inflammatory, hæmatological, cerebral and renal. It is concluded that amphotericin B therapy is beneficial and may be curative." @default.
