- W2336167178 abstract "In the context of a rapidly growing broadband market, it is critical to understand the expectations and QoS requirements of a changing population of end users, in order to make informed strategic decisions. Although a number of technologies are available to fine-tune bandwidth allocation and ensure various forms of fairness, the performance, cost and marketing implications of choosing one regime over another are not always obvious to decision-makers. In this paper, we present the Broadband Broker (B-Cube) simulation tool and demonstrate how it can be used as a strategic planning tool to identify and evaluate the advantages and shortcomings of a wide variety of broadband products, bandwidth management schemes or changes in usage patterns. The main difference between B-Cube and other tools is that using it only requires a high level understanding of the principles governing the distribution of the limited broadband resource. 1. Introduction Delivering and marketing a contended broadband product such as residential DSL is not as straightforward as the delivery and marketing of many conventional consumer products or services. The relationship between what the customer thinks they are buying (a broadband and what they are actually buying (the technical means required to deliver that experience) is complex and multi-layered. It is in the interests of the service provider to preserve the customer's confidence in the simplicity of the broadband proposition. This simple proposition is rooted in the responsiveness and transfer rate of their broadband connection. However, behind the scenes, various influences determine the available capacity and latency experienced by the customer's networked applications. Only some of these influences are under the direct control of the network provider. Broadband performance can be affected by the instantaneous behaviour of other network users as well as the network provisioning, traffic policing and shaping policies selected by the service provider. Depending on the method of provisioning, the policies and user behaviour of other service providers who share wholesale infrastructure components may also influence performance. Close customer scrutiny of broadband performance is likely if commonly used applications become more demanding of bandwidth, or more demanding applications become more commonly used. Ironically, if customers subscribe to broadband in order to take advantage of more bandwidth-intensive applications this not only increases their own performance expectations, but also impacts on the capacity available for both retail and wholesale providers to meet their other users' demands." @default.
