- W2336532884 abstract "This Paper sets out to discuss the various problems that friction material manufacturers and railway Brake Engineers face in the day-to-day testing procedures associated with conversion to composition brake shoes from cast iron or the testing of composition brake shoes. There is in excess of 25 years experience in this field and the Paper emphasises that while no railway system will suffer all of the problems listed in this Paper, at least one or two may sound familiar. Among the list discussed in this Paper are such problems as wheel to rail adhesion, heat dissipation in to the wheel, conditioning of the wheel by cast iron, use of different composition blocks across the same train, rigging requirements and uses of incorrect material for a stipulated requirement. The problems discussed are field testing difficulties and are not Laboratory testing dynamometer results which, while used as benchmarks, cannot be used as the ultimate guide and it is acknowledged that this, of course, will mean the expenditure of funds by the railway and the friction material supplier. Ultimately, the manufacturer and railway authorities can work together to solve all related problems and hence, obtain mutual benefits." @default.
