- W2336692414 abstract "It is possible to have different perceptions on the nature of the threat to Jewish survival in America. Some may think American Jewry is threatened by raging antisemitism while others see it drowning in sea of perfume exuded by society anxious to absorb it. Under ordinary circumstances history could help clarify the picture. Instead it presents muddled story which adds to the confusion. Speaking from Zionist vantage which assumes that the existence of antisemitism in any society is axiomatic, Professor Ben Halpern predictably does not believe that America has been immune from the oldest social malignancy known to man.1 Professors Jonathan Sarna and Michael Dobkowski conclude that the prevalence of antisemitism in nineteenth century America has been underestimated.2 Similarly Professor Naomi Cohen concludes from her research that pluralism had not neutralized the Christian well-springs of antisemitism so that the American Jew remains the quintessential outsider in Christian, albeit secular society.3 Yet when turn to Jewish and non-Jewish Americanists different story emerges. The existence of antisemitism is not denied but its historical importance is questioned. Thus Oscar Handlin, finding turn of the century antisemitic caricatures often involved hostility, negative judgment, is comparatively sanguine about the dangers it poses.4 Edward Flannery, while not ignoring its potential for becoming something more, views it ultimately as minor chapter in American Jewish history.5 Similarly John Higham, the highly regarded student of American nativism points out that no decisive event, deep crisis, powerful social movement, great individual is associated primarily or significant chiefly because of antisemitism. He concluded in the mid-1960s that antisemitism was a thing of the past.6 In between there are numerous historians who fall back on the word ambivalence or radical ambiguity to describe the attitude of the host culture toward Jews.7 The problem stems partly from the fact the term antisemitism, especially in its American setting, is so inclusive and therefore imprecise, that the student can classify under it almost anything which involves conflict with Jews from the perennial contretemps over Christmas creches to the question of alternate side parking on Jewish holidays. Halpern's observation that we are left with highly confused, emotionally loaded term from which serious, mutually opposed consequences are drawn not only by polemical antagonists but by purportedly disinterested analysts, is unavoidable.8" @default.
