- W2337045318 abstract "Clinical pharmacology (CP) was successfully developed in Slovakia (SR) since 1970ies as an interdisciplinary medical specialty, endowed to integrate in its formidable portfolio all scientific expertise, relationships and policy procedures concerning medicinal drugs. Its main aim: improvement of safety and efficacy of practical pharmacotherapy, optimization of medicines utilization processes and medicinal drugs policies. Albeit developed as a clinical, research based discipline, the social and ethical aspects of medicinal drugs use, including pharmaco-economics and public policy issues, were always at the core of CP expertise and service to the patient. Following similar developments abroad, the first conception of CP as a medical specialty was approved by the SR Ministry of Health in 1979. Hospital and outpatient CP departments were established at bigger teaching hospitals all around the country. The first teaching/research unit of CP was founded at the present Slovak Medical University (SMU) in Bratislava in 1983. A comprehensive of postgraduate education and training system in CP was gradually developed. In 1990, the Slovak Society of CP was established (one of the founding societies of EACPT (1995)). Since 1993, CP has been recognized as a medical sub-specialty and since 2004 as a self-standing medical specialty. After some untoward austerity measures, generation exchanges, unfortunate health policy changes and conceptual ambiguity during the previous decade, CP in SR has been put under various pressures, threatening its existence and service. During the last years, however, a new generation of young physicians – clinical pharmacologists has entered the clinical practice in SR. Simultaneously, the new SSCP leadership, together with other partners, has started a complex process of reclaiming the place and space for CP within the present SR health care system. Building on the strong foundations inherited (legal, professional, scientific, conceptual), the “new blood” seems full of energy and determination to achieve these ambitious, noble objectives." @default.
